Rep. Fletcher releases the following statement about supporting the Texas
Tea Party Day across the state
As a proponent of limited government and fiscal conservatism that has brought
Texas to the forefront of the national economy, I want to commend all of the
supporters of the National Tea Party Day.
The current federal stimulus package seeks to provide funding in many areas.
However, some of these funds come with strings which would require a permanent
expansion of certain state programs. I believe that accepting this particular
funding from Washington will place an undue burden on Texas citizens in an
already stressed economic environment, and I am extremely apprehensive of
exchanging short-term relief for a long-time burden.
As a staunch advocate of state rights, I do not agree with Washington
politicians pushing their agenda on the Texas government. Texans should exercise
our right to best allocate the resources as Texans see fit.
I want to make sure while I am in Austin that Texas once again achieves a
balanced state budget. I believe that fiscal responsibility should continue to
be a priority. Therefore, any additional stimulus money should be used for
one-time expenditures and capital improvements. By not allowing a permanent
expansion of our State government, Texans are protected from having to pay for
future expanded services. As one-time expenditures, these funds could benefit
Texans by providing for Gulf Coast repairs and new schools without the burden of
expanded government.
Texans are the independent champions for fiscal fairness and it's only fair that
Texans decide where Texas' tax dollars are spent.
